Public Seminar and Reception Scheduled for Vice Chancellor of IANR Candidate

A series of visits is planned with four candidates identified by a search committee seeking to hire the new vice president and vice chancellor for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at UNL. From 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, a public seminar and reception will be held for Ronnie Green in the Nebraska East Union.
Green lives in Sutton and is senior director of Global Technical Services at Pfizer Animal Health, Animal Genetics. Prior to that, he was national program leader in Food Animal Production at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (2003-2007). He was co-owner and operator of DataGen Beef, a beef cattle consulting business; and a vice president of cattle operations and assistant vice president and director of genetic operations for Future Beef Operations (2000-2002). From 1994-2000 he was professor of animal science at Colorado State University and he was an assistant professor of animal science at Texas Tech University (1988-1994). He was a graduate assistant from 1985-88 at the University of Nebraska. He earned a bachelor's degree in animal science at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, a master's in animal science at Colorado State University, and a Ph.D in animal science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Saving World's Grasslands Theme of Spring Issue of Great Plains Research
Great Plains Research, a publication of the Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, begins its 20th year of publication with its spring issue devoted to "Saving the World's Grasslands."
The authors presented their papers at an April 2009 workshop in Lincoln on "Grasslands of the World" sponsored by The Grassland Foundation, World Wildlife Fund, Denver Zoological Foundation and several sponsors at UNL, including the Center for Great Plains Studies, Center for Grasslands Studies, School of Natural Resources, and the Nebraska Rural Initiative. more...

Perlman, Osborne Enthusiastic About Lincoln's Future With New Haymarket Arena
The new Haymarket Arena - passed in a general election bond vote May 11 - will help keep Lincoln vibrant, will attract students and faculty to Nebraska, and bring a new era for the Husker basketball programs, chancellor Harvey Perlman and Athletic Director Tom Osborne said at a news conference today. Chancellor Perlman congratulated and thanked the people of Lincoln for looking to the future and progress. "The success of this university is tied to the success of this community," he said, and Osborne said the new arena signals a "watershed event" that will put Lincoln nationally in the top 10 percent of basketball facilities.
Coaches Connie Yori and Doc Sadler, two future anchor tenants for the new Lincoln Haymarket Arena Project that won 56 percent public approval Tuesday in a citywide vote, are excited about more than playing basketball in a facility that should be built by fall in 2013. more...
Lied Center Presents Waaxe's Law
The Lied Center for Performing Arts presents a dramatic retelling of the seminal trial of Chief Standing Bear in Omaha, Nebraska in 1879 in Waaxe's Law. The performance will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 13. Tickets are $27.00 and are available at the Lied ticket office only.
The play is based on quotes found in historical accounts, interviews with elders of both the Northern and Southern Ponca tribes, as well as transcripts from the time period surrounding the trial.

National Semiconductor Honors UNL Alumnus With Named Fellowship Fund
Brian Halla
National Semiconductor Corp. has honored University of Nebraska-Lincoln alumnus Brian L. Halla with a named student fellowship fund for the College of Engineering. Halla serves as executive chairman of the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company and was chief executive officer for 14 years before retiring from that position in 2009.
National Semiconductor made a $100,000 gift commitment to the University of Nebraska Foundation in support of the Campaign for Nebraska. The gift establishes the Brian L. Halla-National Semiconductor Fellowship Fund and will provide two annual fellowship awards over the next six years to assist graduate students pursuing a master's degree in the department of electrical engineering.
