Jazz in June Continues With Otro Mundo
The Jazz in June concert series on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus continues on Tuesday, June 8 with Otro Mundo. The concert begin at 7 p.m. under the trees on the plaza west of Sheldon Museum of Art.
Bringing the roots of Samba, Flamenco and Latin jazz, Otro Mundo create a distinctive musical experience. It's an experience the band has shared from President Obama's first state dinner at the White House to stages across Europe and the United States. more...
'Platzgeist: Revealing the Spirit of the Familiar' at Hillestad Textiles Gallery
Kate Sydik, a candidate for a master of arts degree in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Textiles, Clothing and Design, will feature her work in a Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery exhibition June 7-17, "Platzgeist: Revealing the Spirit of the Familiar."
Sydik looked at her surroundings from new perspectives to reveal the "platzgeist," or defining spirit, of these found spaces, often focusing on architectural details such as doorways, walls, and passageways. She hand-dyed the cotton and silk fabrics in the collection through a variety of surface design techniques to have greater control over subtleties in color, value and texture. more...

NU State Museum's Wildlife and Nature Photo Contest Begins This Week
The University of Nebraska State Museum will conduct its second annual "Wildlife and Nature Photo Contest" June 7 through Sept. 1. Amateur photographers who are Nebraska residents age 18 or older are invited to submit their striking photos of wildlife and natural settings taken anywhere in the world. All entries will be showcased in the museum Oct. 1 through Dec. 1 as part of a special exhibit.
Images may show animal behavior, plant life, natural landscapes, portraits of wildlife in a natural habitat and people interacting with nature. Images of pets, domestic animals, or captive animals photographed in zoos or game farms will not qualify for entry. All entries must be original photographs taken by the contestant. more...

Nebraska Summer Research Program Begins This Week
The 4th Annual Nebraska Summer Research Program begins this week at UNL. The program is a combination of NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) and other summer research opportunities programs (SROP). This year's program welcomes 63 students from 55 colleges and universities across the country.
During the 8 to 10 week program students work closely with faculty mentors and graduate students on research problems in their chosen field. The departments of mathematics, biochemistry, materials engineering, physics, biomedical engineering and the school of biological sciences are hosting students.

The Good, The Bad, The Weird; Mother Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Good, The Bad, The Weird and Mother. Both films will screen through June 17.
