NET Features UNL Student's Documentary July 6

Armed with compassion and a video camera, 17-year-old high school student Natalia Ledford produced, directed, wrote, shot and edited a documentary about five Sudanese teenagers who came to the United States to escape a devastating civil war that killed their family members and destroyed their homes.

The documentary, "Paths of the Displaced," airs at 9 p.m., July 6 on NET1 and NET-HD. The program repeats at 7 p.m., July 10 and 6 p.m., July 15 on NET2.

Now a student in UNL's College of Journalism and Mass Communications, Ledford befriended the refugee teens while they were all students at Lincoln High School. more...

Patti Clayton

Patti Clayton, a senior scholar with the Center for Service and Learning at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, will give a talk from 10 - 11:30 a.m. July 6 in the Kauffman Academic Residential Center Great Hall. She will discuss a national perspective of innovative civic engagement initiatives and discusses best practices applicable to UNL.

Clayton has consulted with more than 50 schools and higher ed organizations. As founding director of the Center for Excellence in Curricular Engagement at North Carolina State University, and a faculty fellow with National Campus Compact's Project on Integrating Service with Academic Study, she can provide numerous ideas for integrating service with academic study for UNL.

Anthropology Students Search For Haymarket History

A group of UNL students have started a multi-year dig into the history of Lincoln's historic train depot district.

Participating in the 2010 summer field school in archaeology, the students are searching for artifacts and buildings that date back to the 1870s. The dig is led by Peter Bleed, professor of archaeology, and planned in coordination with the city of Lincoln before construction of the Haymarket Arena begins.

"We are here beginning an assessment of the cultural resources of the west Haymarket arena area," said Bleed. "The major things we are looking for are the Immigrant and Burlington houses. The exact location of these historic buildings is uncertain." more...

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Mother And Child and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Mother And Child will screen through July 8, while The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo will show through July 15.
