UNL Digital Scholars Net Major Grant for Civil-War Era Explorations
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has earned a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to expand its digital research on Civil War-era Washington, D.C., especially its pivotal role in the antislavery and civil rights movements. A grant celebration will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Van Brunt Visitors Center, 313 N. 13th St.
The three-year, $220,000 "We the People" grant will support the interdisciplinary Civil War Washington project that examines the war's impact on the nation's capital. The "We the People" designation recognizes projects that advance the study, teaching and understanding of American history and principles.
Graduate Studies to Host Research Symposium Poster Session
The 2010 Nebraska Summer Research Program concludes this week with a Research Symposium. A Poster Session will be held in conjuction with this event, from 1-3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 11 in the Nebraska Union Ballroom. The Poster Session is open to the public and will feature research that Visiting Summer Research Program Scholars have worked on during their 10-week stay at UNL.
The Nebraska Summer Research Program is a consortium of NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) and other summer research opportunities programs (SROP). This intensive summer research experience provides mentoring and research experiences for students from institutions across the United States while allowing them to preview graduate school life. Sixty-four students participated in the 2010 Nebraska Summer Research Program.
Movies on the Green Features Texas Across the River
The Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center and the University Program Council will present a series of classic comedies in the annual Jensen's Cinema 16 Collection Movies on the Green series on Thursdays through Aug. 19. Films in the series will be shown at dusk (approximately 9 p.m.) on the lawn north of Kimball Hall. Screenings are free and open to the public. Popcorn and soda are available for purchase.
The series continues this week on Thursday, Aug. 12 with the comic western Texas Across The River, starring Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, Rosemary Forsyth, and Peter Graves.
Stuart Embury of Holdrege Donates Art Book Collection to UNL Libraries
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries announced that it has received more than 11,000 books and exhibition catalogues donated by Stuart P. Embury, M.D., of Holdrege, a 1966 graduate of UNL and 1969 UNMC graduate. Embury amassed what is considered one of the top private book collections on American art in the United States over 40 years.
The Stuart P. Embury MD Library of American Art contains primary material and books covering all major and many minor figures in American Art, including painters, sculptors and printmakers. There are thousands of exhibition catalogues including nearly complete runs from the National Academy of Design and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Some of the titles were published in the 1800s. Knoll Residential Center Open House Held on Aug. 11
University Housing will host an open house at the Knoll Residential Center for faculty and staff on Wednesday, Aug. 11 from 3-5 p.m.
The Robert E. Knoll Residential Center will open in the fall semester, 2010. and features 565 beds in suite-style units, with just over half of those units available for freshmen residents in four-person, double room suites.
Blood Into Wine; Cyrus Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Blood Into Wine and Cyrus. Both films will show through Aug. 12.
