UPC Presents: Big Boi, Macklemore Concert and Pep Rally

Big Boi of OutKast
On Oct. 14 University Program Council along with ASUN Student Government, Residence Hall Association, Greek Affairs, Nebraska Athletics, Student Affairs, and Student Involvement will sponsor a free outdoor concert and pep rally for UNL students featuring Big Boi from Outkast and Macklemore with Ryan Lewis. This event will take place at 8 p.m. on the Meier Commons, the green space north of Nebraska Union.
At the concert and rally, UNL will be attempting to break the U.S. record of single location check-ins on foursquare. The concert is presented by the University Program Council, ASUN, the Residence Hall Association, Greek Affairs, Nebraska Athletics, Student Affairs and Student Involvement. more...
New MRI Machine Furthers Tissue Studies
UNL scientists are using MRI to monitor biomaterials and engineered tissues. Among other advances, some day this could lead to noninvasive biopsies of potentially cancerous tissues or regenerated organs. Angie Pannier and Shadi Othman, UNL biological systems engineers, are studying engineered bone and fat tissues that in the future could be implanted into the human body to replace tissue lost due to injury or disease.
While tissue engineering isn't new - engineered skin and cartilage already are available in the United States - using an MRI to monitor growth and development is. Specifically, Othman is combining MRI with mechanical actuators and custom software to develop a technique called magnetic resonance elastography to measure changes in the mechanical properties of engineered tissues in living mice. more...

Former EPA Administrator to Give Thompson Lecture
Christine Todd Whitman, a former administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, will discuss energy and environmental sustainability Oct. 14 when she delivers the second lecture in the 2010-11 season of the E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues.
Whitman will present "Staying Ahead While Going Green," at 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. The lecture, sponsored by the Nebraska Humanities Council, is this year's Governor's Lecture in the Humanities. more...

Nebraska Wildlife Federation to Award UNL Wildlife Club
The Nebraska Wildlife Federation will present the UNL Wildlife Club with its 2010 Conservation Organization Award during the federation's annual banquet, Oct. 14 at Mahoney State Park. The award recognizes the club's efforts to educate others about fish and wildlife in Nebraska.
The UNL Wildlife Club also helps raise the next generation of conservationists by teaching kids radiotelemetry - the use of tracking collars - at the Ponca State Expo each September and at Morrill Hall during NaturePalooza in October. more...

UNL's University Theatre Opens Season With Dylan
University Theatre, the academic main stage producing wing of the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, opens its 2010-2011 season with Dylan by Sidney Michaels. Directed by Aaron Sawyer, an MFA candidate in Directing for Stage and Screen as partial fulfillment of his degree, Dylan is on the Studio Theatre stage Oct. 14-15 at 7:30 p.m.
Set in 1950's Wales and America, Dylan follows acclaimed Welsh poet and public speaker Dylan Thomas to the colleges, bars and bedrooms of his last American tour and finally to the ship that carried him home. Tickets are $16, $14 faculty/staff and senior citizen, $10 students with ID. Restrepo; Stonewall Uprising Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Restrepo and Stonewall Uprising. Stonewall Uprising will screen through Oct. 14, while Restrepo will show through Oct. 21.
