Behlen Observatory
Behlen Observatory Holds Open House

Behlen Observatory near Mead will be open to the public 7:30-10 p.m. Oct. 15. At 8 p.m. professor M. Eugene Rudd of the Department of Physics and Astronomy will give an illustrated talk, "Stories from the Early Days of the Department of Physics and Astronomy."

Provided the sky is clear, visitors will be able to view a variety of objects with the 30-inch telescope and with smaller telescopes set up outside of the observatory. These include the moon, the planets Jupiter and Uranus, two kinds of star clusters, double or multiple stars, and the Ring Nebula in Lyra. more...

Nebraska Alumni Association Hosts Football Fridays

Former Husker football players, current Nebraska athletic coaches and other local celebrities headline the Nebraska Alumni Association's 2010 Football Friday event on Oct. 15. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., and the program is from 5:30 to 7. Football Friday is free and open to the public, and food and drink will be available for purchase. Fans in attendance have the opportunity to win football tickets, Champions Club passes and Husker memorabilia.

Wayne Bergeron Teams up with Nebraska Jazz Orchestra

Jazz lovers can come to the Lied Center for Performing Arts to experience a night of world-class music 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 when Wayne Bergeron joins up with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra.

Wayne Bergeron is considered to be one of L.A.'s most highly sought-after and award-winning trumpet players. He has been involved with numerous famous recording artists ranging from Beyonce to Josh Groban and from Barry Manilow to "Weird Al" Yankovic. His movie credits are just as extensive, with his trumpet being heard in countless movies such as "Catch Me if You Can," "Finding Nemo," "Hot Rod," and "The Day After Tomorrow." Captain Jim Davidsaver of the Lincoln Police Department uses the mobile data computer in his cruiser. UNL researchers are working with LPD to test smart phones and GPS-enabled laptops to improve patrol duties.

Researchers to track technology, find best tool to aid police

Increasingly popular smart cell phones and other mobile Global Positioning Service-enabled devices have made life easier for countless people. Now, UNL researchers are ready to study whether police can use those tools to do their jobs better and more efficiently.

Researchers with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the NU Public Policy Center are turning to the Lincoln Police Department to test the theory that use of the commercially available devices has significant implications for the criminal justice system, including the potential to make law enforcement agencies more efficient and communities safer. more...

'Sunday With a Scientist' to Explore Native American Life

The University of Nebraska State Museum will present a program for children and families about traditional Native American life on the Great Plains as part of its Sunday with a Scientist series, 1:30-4:30 p.m., Oct. 17 at Morrill Hall.

The program, "Native Americans: Tipi Life on the Prairie's Edge," will be led by Mark Awakuni-Swetland, associate professor of anthropology and ethnic studies. Visitors can view and learn about a modern 14-foot tipi, along with late 19th- to early 20th-century furnishings, clothing, tools and games. more...

UNL's University Theatre Opens Season With Dylan

University Theatre, the academic main stage producing wing of the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, opens its 2010-2011 season with Dylan by Sidney Michaels. Directed by Aaron Sawyer, an MFA candidate in Directing for Stage and Screen as partial fulfillment of his degree, Dylan is on the Studio Theatre stage Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Set in 1950's Wales and America, Dylan follows acclaimed Welsh poet and public speaker Dylan Thomas to the colleges, bars and bedrooms of his last American tour and finally to the ship that carried him home. Tickets are $16, $14 faculty/staff and senior citizen, $10 students with ID. Tickets are available at the Lied Center Ticket Office, 301 N. 12th Street Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the UNL Theatre Tickets website or at the theatre the evening of performance (subject to availability).more...
