Nebraska Alumni Association Hosts Football Fridays

Former Husker football players, current Nebraska athletic coaches and other local celebrities headline the Nebraska Alumni Association's 2010 Football Friday event on Oct. 29. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., and the program is from 5:30 to 7. Football Friday is free and open to the public, and food and drink will be available for purchase. Fans in attendance have the opportunity to win football tickets, Champions Club passes and Husker memorabilia.

Featured guests this week include volleyball coach John Cook, former players Matt Davison and Tommie Frazier, Jon Nyatawa, Omaha World-Herald, Brian Rosenthal, Lincoln Journal-Star, and Kevin Sjuts (KOLN/KGIN 10/11). more...

Dia de los Muertos Event at Sheldon Museum

A colorful "ofrenda," Spanish poetry and art will adorn the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Sheldon Museum of Art's Great Hall and galleries this October in Celebration of Dia de los Muertos. Music, dancing and food will be part of two special events celebrating the centuries old spiritual tradition that expresses the continuity of life by honoring the dead on their return to Earth for one day each year.

On Sunday, Oct. 31, from noon to 4 p.m., Sheldon will play host to a free Family Day. Events include a production of "The Migrant Farmworker's Son" performed by Lincoln High School theater students, music from Mariachi Luna y Sol, art-making activities and an announcement proclaiming the winner in the Sheldon Calaveras contest. Mexican breads, chocolate and other traditional foods will be available for visitors. more...

Jorgensen Hall Dedication to Feature Nobel Laureate, Extreme Ribbon Cutting

The UNL community is invited to celebrate the dedication of Jorgensen Hall, the university's new physics building, where the winners of a ribbon-cutting contest will put their Rube Goldberg device to work.

Nobel laureate and alumnus Alan Heeger will kick off the dedication day events on Oct. 29 with a talk at 4 p.m. in Jorgensen Hall 136. Heeger will address the role risk-taking plays in science. He'll also discuss how the building's namesake, Ted Jorgensen, steered him into a career in physics. The dedication ceremony will follow at 4:30 p.m. in Jorgensen Hall's atrium. more...

GIMP Dance Performance is Friday at Lied

Revolutionary dance company GIMP will perform at the Lied Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29 as part of a week-long residency with the College of Fine and Performing Arts' Interdisciplinary Arts Symposium.

GIMP is a company of mixed-ability dancers, some with physical challenges including muscular dystrophy or prosthetic limbs. The performance will be followed immediately by a discussion between GIMP artistic director Heidi Latsky and Joan Acocella, a writer for The New Yorker magazine. more...

Carl Mack, executive director of the National Society of Black Engineers, will speak from 6:30-8 p.m., Oct. 29 in the East Union. Advance tickets for this event are $5 per student, $7 per non-student and $40 per table. At the door, tickets are $8 per student and $10 per non-student. Mack is a former NAACP chapter president and founder of Summer Engineering for Kids. He has appeared on CNN and "Good Morning America." He has been recognized by Ebony magazine as one of the Top 150 Black Leaders in America.

Student Group Ready to Spook at Haunted House
Dead Letter Days

Join UNL student organization Starving Actors for its third annual "Dead Letter Days." Located in the Temple Building, this three-day event is the only haunted house on campus. The public is invited from 9 p.m.-1 a.m., Oct. 29 and from 8 p.m.-1 a.m., Oct. 30 and 31. Admission is $5 at the door.

All proceeds benefit independent student theatre and film projects.

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Never Let Me Go and Cairo Time. Cairo Time will show through Nov. 4, while Never Let Me Go will screen through Nov. 11.
