Federal Funding Supports New Alternative Energy Research, Outreach Project

Rural Nebraska is well-suited for development of alternative energy sources, and a new federally funded project will support UNL research and outreach efforts in this area.

Groundbreaking for the project, Sustainable Energy Options for Rural Nebraska, was Oct. 21 at the Haskell Agricultural Lab near Concord. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry and several UNL officials attended the event. Fortenberry was instrumental in getting $500,000 in funding for the project. more...

 

Football Friday
Nebraska Alumni Association Hosts Final Football Friday

Former Husker football players, current Nebraska athletic coaches and other local celebrities headline the Nebraska Alumni Association's 2010 Football Friday event on Nov. 12. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., and the program is from 5:30 to 7. Football Friday is free and open to the public, and food and drink will be available for purchase. Fans in attendance have the opportunity to win football tickets, Champions Club passes and Husker memorabilia.

Featured guests this week include former players Trev Alberts, Matt Davison, and Tommie Frazier, John Bishop, (KLIN), Mike Babcick, (Huskers Illustrated), and Kevin Sjuts (KOLN/KGIN 10/11).

Antique French Quilt Exhibit Opens Saturday

The International Quilt Study Center and Museum will present the first U.S. exhibition exclusively devoted to the French needlework tradition, "broderie de Marseille," Nov. 13-May 22. "Marseille: White Corded Quilting" will demonstrate the qualities that make French whole cloth quilted and corded needlework unique, review the origins and development of the tradition, and describe its influence on quilted needlework traditions over three centuries on five continents.

Gov. Dave Heinemann has proclaimed the week of Nov. 13-20 as "Marseille Exhibition Premier Week." Guest curator Kathryn Berenson will visit from her Paris home and will be joined by the French consul general of the Chicago Consulate, Graham Paul, for a formal event recognizing the cultural significance of the exhibition. 'Light of the Piazza' Opens Friday

The School of Music is bringing Adam Guttela's Broadway musical "Light in the Piazza" to UNL. Performances are 7:30 p.m., Nov. 12 and 3 p.m., Nov. 14 in Kimball Recital Hall. Set in Florence, Italy, "Light in the Piazza" focuses on the interactions between an Italian and American family. The secrets of each character propel the story and create a dramatic dilemma that unfolds through the performance.

Alisa Belflower, a senior lecturer in music and director of the production, said the small details are crucial in accurately depicting the six-time Tony Award-winning show. more...

 

International Education Week
Theatrix Presents The Inferno

Theatrix, the student-run theatre organization at the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, is excited to continue its fall 2010 season with The Inferno. Adapted and directed by senior Jordan Deffenbaugh, The Inferno is inspired by the first part of Dante Alighieri's fourteenth-century epic poem, "The Divine Comedy". It is an allegory telling of Dante's journey through the nine circles of Hell, guided by the poet Virgil.

Starring Lucy Myrtue, Ryan Rabstejnek and Emily Martinez, The Inferno features a cast of movers and dancers who take the stage and become the mythical creatures found on Dante's journey. The Inferno will have performances on Nov. 12th at 7:30 p.m., and Nov. 14th at 2:00 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 can be purchased online at the Theatrix website or at the door.

 

Barrage
Lied Hosts Barrage Friday

Barrage, a high-octane string group that features an international, multi-talented cast performing an eclectic mix of music, song and dance brings its show to the Lied Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12.

Featuring seven violinists/vocalists, a drummer, a bass player and a guitarist, Barrage performances offer up a diverse fusion of cultures, musical styles and incredible performance vitality. UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Soul Kitchen and Inside Job. Soul Kitchen will screen through Nov. 18, while Inside Job will show through Nov. 25.
