Dinosaurs and Disasters
'Dinosaurs and Disasters' is Saturday at Morrill Hall

The University of Nebraska State Museum and the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences will host the seventh-annual "Dinosaurs and Disasters" family fun day 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 5, at Morrill Hall. This event is part of a year-long celebration of the museum's 140th anniversary.

"Dinosaurs and Disasters" provides a day of discovery and hands-on activities throughout the museum with more than 20 stations staffed by UNL scientists, and graduate and undergraduate students. This year's theme is "Earth, Wind, Fire and Water." Interactive games and activities will help visitors better understand planet Earth by exploring how its elements translate into natural disasters, extreme weather events, and climate change. more...

 

Report Looks at Tobacco Settlement Investment, Return
tobacco settlement

An economic impact report by one of the leading economists in the Midwest found that tobacco settlement funds invested into biomedical research at Nebraska's four leading research institutions has produced an 8 to 1 return.

The report was developed by Ernest Goss, MacAllister Chair and professor of economics at Creighton University and director of the Goss Institute in Denver. more...

Sheldon Events to Help Open Lincoln Photofest
Photo contest

Lincoln's biennial celebration of photography - Lincoln PhotoFest - returns in February. Museums and galleries throughout Lincoln will participate by opening exhibitions featuring national, local and emerging photographers. The first Lincoln PhotoFest in 2009 was widely regarded as a tremendous success.

Sheldon will launch the photo contest with its Feb. 4 First Friday event. Those wanting to participate in the contest can register online at the Sheldon Museum of Art website or by filling out a form and bringing it to the Feb. 4 First Friday. Free Skate Night at the Ice Box is Sunday
Ice box

UNL faculty, staff and students can attend a free skate night, 9:30 to 11:30 p.m., Feb. 6 at the Ice Box on Innovation Campus. Skating is free with a valid N-Card and $6 for the general public and guests. Skates are available to rent for $3.

Free skate nights are hosted by UNL Campus Recreation. The next free skate event is Feb. 20. For more information, call 472-3467.

 

Wear Red Social is Friday
Red Social

The UNL Wellness Initiative is teaming with other campus units to offer a "Wear Red Social," 1:30 to 3 p.m., Feb. 4 in the Nebraska Union (room posted).

The event will recognize the American Heart Association's call to make February heart month. Information on the heart and heart disease will be provided. The event is also designed to encourage socializing between participants. "Heart Truth" is free and open to faculty, staff and students.

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Another Year and The Illusionist. Both films will screen through Feb. 17.
