Study Estimates Insurance Industry Brings $10.3B to State Economy

Nebraska's insurance industry produces high-wage workers, contributes to a "brain gain" for the state and had an overall impact of $10.3 billion on the state's economy last year, a new study shows.

The research by economists Eric Thompson of UNL and Ernie Goss of Creighton University also found that on average, employees of the state's insurance businesses earned $383 more a week than Nebraska's other private-sector workers.

The study underscores the importance of the insurance industry to the state's economy and in retaining highly skilled young Nebraska workers, Thompson said. more...

 

Regents approve naming Water for Food Institute for Daugherty
Water for Food

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents on March 11 approved the naming of the Water for Food Institute, the university-wide research education and policy analysis center established last year with a $50 million gift from the Robert B. Daugherty Charitable Foundation. The center is now the Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Institute.

The Daugherty Institute is dedicated to the efficient and sustainable use of water to feed a rapidly growing global population. The university announced Daugherty's gift - one of the largest in its history - in April 2010. Daugherty, the founder of Valmont Industries who became a leader in improving agricultural productivity, died in November. more...

Sunday Scientist Explores Lasers, Optics March 20

What do sunglasses, barcodes, and Blu-Ray discs all have in common? Lasers and optics. The University of Nebraska State Museum will host a Sunday with a Scientist program for children and families to learn about light, lasers, and optics from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. March 20 at Morrill Hall. Museum hours Sunday are 1:30-4:30 p.m.

Scientists in the UNL Department of Electrical Engineering will provide fun, hands-on activities and demonstrations to help visitors learn how lasers and optics work and impact our lives. Visitors will have the opportunity to tune and generate lasers, while exploring the fascinating properties of light and optics. The scientists will also explain the many ways in which we encounter them in daily life, from sunglasses, TV remote controllers, LCD displays and DVD players, to hologram art. more...

Lied Extends Half Price Tickets to Faculty, Staff

The Lied Center for Performing Arts is offering faculty and staff the opportunity to purchase half price tickets to the Count Basie Orchestra performance at 7:30 p.m., March 18.

Founded by Count Basie in 1935, the legendary group is a 16- to 18-piece big band and was once of the most prominent jazz performing groups of the swing era. The band is directed by Dennis Mackrel. The Count Basie Orchestra has won 17 Grammy awards. The half-price tickets for faculty, staff and students are $17.50/$15/$12.50. For more information, go to the Lied Center website. UNL Campus Spring
Adjusted Hours, Bus Routes For Spring Break

Parking and Transit Services will adjust UNL's bus operating schedule on March. 21. The change is due to lower passenger demand when classes are not in session. Starting March. 21, the wait between buses on City Campus will shift to 20 minutes, while the wait on East Campus will be 10 minutes. Service hours will be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Regular bus service returns March. 28.
