Mills, Kane Earn Outstanding Student Leader Honor

Zachary Kane of Valparaiso and Jorden Mills of Omaha were honored by Student Affairs on April 8 with UNL's 2011 Outstanding Student Leadership Awards.

Multiple UNL selection committees on behalf of the Office of Student Affairs annually select one male and one female student for recognition for their outstanding leadership contributions at UNL and their efforts to develop leadership qualities in their fellow students. The Outstanding Student Leadership Award is one of the highest awards presented to students, recognizing outstanding leadership in academic, co-curricular, and/or extracurricular activities and involvement. more...

 

Water Seminar Series to Feature Bill Hunt

Bill Hunt

Bill Hunt, of North Carolina State University, will present "Research and Design of Green Stormwater Management Practices" at 3:30 p.m., April 13 in Hardin Hall Auditorium. The lecture is co-sponsored by the UNL Extension Stormwater Management Team and is free and open to the public.

Since 2000, Hunt has assisted with the design, installation, and/or monitoring of over 90 stormwater best management practices (BMPs), including bioretention, stormwater wetlands, innovative wet ponds, green roofs, permeable pavement, water harvesting/cistern systems and level spreaders. He teaches 20-25 short courses and workshops each year on stormwater BMP design and function throughout NC and the US.

Railroads' Impact on Great Plains Topic of Olson Seminar

William G. Thomas III

"Railroads, the Making of Modern America, and the Shaping of the Great Plains" is the topic of the Paul A. Olson Seminar in Great Plains Studies. William G. Thomas III will speak from 3:30-5 p.m., April 13 in the Great Plains Art Museum. The seminar and a 3 p.m. reception at the museum are free and open to the public.

Thomas is chair of the Department of History and John and Catherine Angle chair in the humanities at UNL. He is the recipient of a Digital Innovation Fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies and a National Endowment for the Humanities research grant for his digital project "Railroads and the Making of Modern America." Thomas is working on a book titled "The Iron Way: The Civil War and the Making of Modern America." more...

Research Fair Focuses on Food, Water and Energy

The UNL Research Fair continues today with the Food, Water and Energy Resources Policy Symposium, a continuing discussion on a major interdisciplinary research initiative.

Featured presentations include Shenggen Fan of the International Food Policy Research Institute, at 8:45 a.m.; a speed networking session at 10 a.m.; Kathie L. Olsen of ScienceWorks LLC, at 3:15 p.m.; and Stan Johnson of the National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy at 4 p.m. The symposium at the East Union is co-sponsored by the Office of the Chancellor, Office of Research and Economic Development, Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Office of Academic Affairs. more...

University Theatre presents 'Twelfth Night'

University Theatre completes its season with William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night." The production has performances at 7:30 p.m., April 13-17 in the Temple Building's Studio Theatre. It is directed by Ian Borden, assistant professor.

Set in the Old West in Illyria, the production is one of Shakespeare's most popular comedies of mistaken identity and love triangles. Twins Viola and Sebastian are separated during a shipwreck. Masquerading as a young boy in Duke Orsino's household, Viola finds herself in the hilarious web of the duke's relationship with Olivia and her various suitors. more...
