Research Fair Kicks Off With Supercomputing Symposium
Spring Research Fair

The UNL Research Fair begins today with the Nebraska Supercomputing Symposium, a universitywide discussion on high-performance computing topics. For more information, go to http://researchfair.unl.edu. Caspar Ammann, deputy program manager of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, presents "Capacity Building Options and Opportunities," at a noon luncheon. Other key presenters include Victoria White, Fermilab's associate director for computing science and technology, at 1:45 p.m.; and William G. (Gerry) McCartney, Purdue University's vice president for information technology and chief information officer, at 3:15 p.m.

Today's Research Fair events are in the Nebraska Union and sponsored by the Holland Computing Center, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Office of Research and Economic Development. The UNL Research Fair continues through April 14. view the full celebration week schedule.

 

Maxwell Arboretum
Maxwell Arboretum Walking Tours Offered

UNL Gardens' informal walking tours of the Earl G. Maxwell Arboretum on East Campus will continue in 2011. The tours are scheduled noon to 1 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, beginning today.

The tours are led by Emily Levine, special projects research horticulturist with Agronomy and Horticulture and former grounds supervisor for the arboretum. They are free and open to the public. Levine said no end date has been set for the 2011 tours. more...

World Trade is Focus of Thompson Forum Finale

Economist and author Pietra Rivoli will share her views about the economics, history and politics of world trade on April 12 in the final lecture of this season's E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues. Rivoli, a professor at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, will present "Who's Afraid of International Trade?" at 7 p.m. in the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

The lecture also is this year's Lewis E. Harris Lecture on Public Policy, which honors the founder of Harris Laboratories, a longtime international leader in laboratory services that was based in Lincoln. The annual lecture examines major public policy issues and provides an opportunity for students and the business and academic communities in Nebraska to interact. more...

Sally and Wil Hergenrader

First-generation college graduate and German descendant Wil Hergenrader practically grew up on the University of Nebraska campus throughout the 1930s and '40s. He'd walk through campus from his Russian Bottoms neighborhood just north of campus to explore, always ending up at his favorite spot - the College of Engineering.

His comfort with the university and longtime interest in mechanical engineering - thanks largely to helping his dad at a one-man auto garage on North 10th Street - helped make it a natural decision to study engineering at Nebraska, where he graduated in 1954. more...

 

Sheldon Hosts Student Fashion Show Today
Student Fashion Show

Students in the UNL Textiles, Clothing and Design program will present their work in a fashion show at 5:30 p.m., April 12 in the Sheldon Museum of Art. The event is free and open to the public.

Barbara Trout, associate professor of textiles, clothing and design, has worked with students to create a diverse collection that exhibits the wide range of talent within the program.
