'Sunday with a Scientist' presents 'The Fascinating World of Fruit'
The University of Nebraska State Museum's next "Sunday with a Scientist" program for children and families will explore "The Fascinating World of Fruit" from 1:30-4:30 p.m., April 17 in Morrill Hall. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 5-18 and free for children age 4 and under. UNL staff, faculty and students are admitted free with valid NCard.
Assistant professors Stacey D. Smith and Sabrina Russo from the UNL School of Biological Sciences will provide fun, hands-on activities and demonstrations to help visitors learn about the diversity of cultivated and wild fruit. more...
$5 Million in Budget Reductions Proposed
Chancellor Harvey Perlman announced April 14 proposals for reductions to the fiscal year 2011-12 UNL budget totaling $5 million. The proposed cuts are in response to the need to address increased university expenses including utilities, insurance and operating costs.
"This is the type of news I never like having to deliver to you," Perlman wrote in a campuswide e-mail. "While the Legislature's budget proposal calls for no reductions in our state funding over the course of the next two years - and we are encouraged by that proposal - we still need to address increasing expenses." more...

Maynard to Lecture on Diversity in Media Coverage

Dori Maynard
Dori Maynard, president of the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, will speak about the coverage of diverse groups in the media, including race, gender and age, at 3 p.m., April 15 in the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center room 212.
The April 14 lecture is based on Pigliucci's book "Nonsense on Stilts: How to Tell Science from Bunk." The lecture is part of the School of Biological Sciences seminar series and co-sponsored by the Nebraska Citizens for Science. more...

Huskers Offer Busy Weekend at Home
UNL will host a busy weekend of Husker home sporting events. Big Red action kicks off with the annual Red-White Spring Game at Memorial Stadium, 1 p.m. April 16. Also on April 16, the Husker baseball team faces Kansas State at 3:05 p.m. at Hawks Field; and the Nebraska volleyball team hosts Iowa State in a 7 p.m. exhibition at the Coliseum. Tickets for all three events are still available for purchase at Huskers.com, by phone at 1-800-8-BIG-RED, or in person at the Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office.
The women's tennis team battles Texas A&M at noon, April 17 at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Husker baseball team wraps up the K-State series with games at 1:05 p.m. on April 17 and 18. more...
Engineering Open House is Friday
The College of Engineering's annual E-Week open house is Friday, Apr. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in Othmer Hall. The theme is "Solving Tomorrow's Problems Today." The open house will feature Timothy Crockett, senior vice president of HDR, as the guest speaker. His presentation is at 10:30 a.m.
The event will include engineering students and faculty (current and future) and their families; alumni; employers and interested community members. Senior projects will be on display. And future engineers will get hands-on with designing protective devices for a 40-foot egg drop off the roof.

Catalina Trio to Play at the Sheldon April 16

The 2010-11 season for the Sheldon Friends of Chamber Music closes April 16 with the Castalia Trio in the Sheldon Museum of Art's Ethel S. Abbott Auditorium. The concert begins at 8 p.m. A pre-performance lecture at 7:30 p.m. will explore the concert content for the audience, and a post-performance reception offers wine, food and conversation with the musicians.
Tickets are $35 for adults and $8 for students. NET Radio members with a member card get a two- for-the-price-of-one discount, and Lincoln Arts Council donors with a Spark card receive a $5 discount on adult admission. University Theatre presents 'Twelfth Night'

University Theatre completes its season with William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night." The production has performances at 7:30 p.m., April 15-17 in the Temple Building's Studio Theatre. It is directed by Ian Borden, assistant professor.
Set in the Old West in Illyria, the production is one of Shakespeare's most popular comedies of mistaken identity and love triangles. Twins Viola and Sebastian are separated during a shipwreck. Masquerading as a young boy in Duke Orsino's household, Viola finds herself in the hilarious web of the duke's relationship with Olivia and her various suitors. more...

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Woodmans and Win Win. The Woodmans will screen through Apr. 21, while Win Win will show through May 5.
