Panel to Discuss Immigration Issues

Nebraska has always been a land of immigrants, but immigration issues have been at the center of public debate in 2011. The College of Journalism and Mass Communications will host a community conversation about immigration challenges and opportunities at 5:30 p.m. April 18 in Andersen Hall, room 15.
Panelists participating in the moderated discussion include State Sen. Charlie Janssen of Fremont, UNL student Benjamin Kantack, the Rev. David Lux of Lincoln's St. Paul United Methodist Church and Leticia Rodriguez of Madison, a recruiter for the Nebraska Department of Education's Migrant Education Program. Audience members will have the opportunity to explore issues, question panelists and offer suggestions in this civic conversation sponsored by the Nebraska State Historical Society and the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. more...

UNLPD Offers 'Situational Awareness' to Faculty, Staff

The UNL Police Department is offering training and information sessions on "situational awareness." The sessions, designed for faculty and staff, will include information on things to think about and how to protect yourself during what could be a volatile situation.
Situational awareness means understanding how information, events and an people's actions will impact an individual's safety - and possibly their survival - in emergency situations. Hour-long sessions in the Nebraska Union are 10 a.m., April 18; 2 p.m., April 19; 10 a.m., April 21; and 10 a.m., April 22. A session in the Nebraska East Union is 2:30 p.m., April 18. Alumnus to Lead Seminar on 'Creating an Evergreen Agriculture in the Tropics'

Dennis Garrity
Dennis Garrity, director general of the World Agroforestry Centre and UNL graduate, will lead a seminar on "Creating an Evergreen Agriculture in the Tropics," at 10:30 a.m., today in the Nebraska East Union.
Garrity is a systems agronomist and research leader, whose career has focused on development of small-scale farming systems in the tropics. He is the CEO of the World Agroforestry Center, the global leader in advancing the science and practice of producing trees on farms. Its vision is to foster a smallholder tree revolution through increased use of trees in agricultural landscapes to help overcome hunger and poverty and create a sustainable environment. more...

Spanier to Share Experiences, Insights of Penn State Joining Big Ten

Graham Spanier
Penn State president and former UNL chancellor Graham Spanier will speak from 2-3:30 p.m. April 18 in the Sheldon Museum of Art auditorium. Spanier was chancellor of UNL from 1991 to 1995. He will offer to a faculty audience insights and perspectives on Penn State's transition into the Big Ten, which Penn State joined in 1989.
This is the second and final forum sponsored by the Faculty Senate and Academic Planning Committee examining how UNL will be affected by joining the Big Ten Conference and Committee on Institutional Cooperation. The first forum, March 17, featured UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman. more...
UNL Students Plan Focus Nebraska for Earth Week Events

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's student government, ASUN, and the Environmental Resource Center are organizing a weeklong event, "Focus Nebraska" April 18-22 during the week of Earth Day, April 22. Today, a 5 p.m., bike ride will leave from Broyhill Fountain at Nebraska Union Plaza for a bike ride around Lincoln's best trails. At 6:30 p.m. in Othmer Hall 106, senior vice president of HDR Tom Sanders will discuss sustainable development and the engineering job market for green jobs.
The main goal of "Focus Nebraska" is to educate students and the rest of the university community about the climate and the environment. Activities and programs have been planned, such as campuswide bike rides, lectures, documentary films, tree planting and an art display. The events are free and open to the public. more...

Buros Lecture Examines Computer-Based Tests for Students With Disabilities

Cara Laitusis, a senior research scientist at Educational Testing Service, will present "Issues with Accessibility of Computer-Based Tests for Students with Disabilities," 3 to 4:30 p.m., April 18. The lecture is in Mabel Lee Hall, room 265, and will be followed by a reception in the Buros Library, room 23, Teachers College Hall.
The lecture and reception are free and open to all faculty, staff and students.

Schaffert to Read from Latest Novel

Timothy Schaffert
Timothy Schaffert will read from and discuss his latest novel, "The Coffins of Little Hope," at 7 p.m., April 18 in the University Bookstore. A book signing will follow. The event is free and open to the public.
Shaffert is a lecturer in the Department of English. He grew up on a farm in Nebraska and lives in Omaha. He's the author of three other novels, including "The Phantom Limbs of the Rollow Sisters" and "The Singing and Dancing Daughters of God." more...

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Woodmans and Win Win. The Woodmans will screen through Apr. 21, while Win Win will show through May 5.
