Oliva Leaving for Provost Spot at FIT

Giacomo M. "Jack" Oliva, dean of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, has announced his resignation to become provost at the Fashion Institute of Technology at the State University of New York. Oliva has been dean of Fine and Performing Arts since 2001.
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Ellen Weissinger said the college's associate dean, Christin Mamiya, Hixson-Lied professor of Art and Art History, will serve as interim dean. Oliva previously served as director of the School of Music at the University of Florida, as head of the department of music at Mississippi State University, as director of music for the Leonia, N.J., Public Schools, and as an instrumental and vocal music teacher in several New Jersey school districts.Read more on Today@UNL
Volunteers Sought to Help Maintain Campus Gardens
The UNL Garden Volunteer program seeks individuals who wish to assist Landscape Services care for campus grounds. The program runs from summer to early fall. Participants meet 9 to 11 a.m., every Tuesday and Thursday on both campuses. Tasks vary, with most of the focus on campus perennial gardens. One-time service projects are available for large groups.

Donation of Cather Documents, Start of Unfinished Novel, Made to UNL
Charles Cather, an heir to his aunt Willa Cather, has left an estate gift to the University of Nebraska that includes manuscripts including the beginning of her last novel, letters, medals and inscribed first editions of her work.
Charles Cather, Willa's nephew, died March 14 in California, and his personal property relating to Willa Cather was given to the University of Nebraska Foundation. The materials, which were loaned to the foundation from Charles Cather and became a gift upon his death, arrived last December to be catalogued by the university. While the materials have not been formally appraised, the estimated value is $2 million. They will be unveiled at an event at 10 a.m. May 12 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Van Brunt Visitors Center, 313 N. 13th St. Read more...
Bike to Work Week Rally is May 13
The UNL Wellness Initiative is organizing a faculty, staff and student bike ride that will join in a May 13, city-led celebration of Bike to Work Week. The bike/walk to work week rally ride will leave the Campus Rec Center (east entrance) at 7:50 a.m. Check in begins at 7:30 a.m.
The Lincoln rally begins at 8 a.m. at the Lancaster County/City of Lincoln building at 555 S. 10th St. The UNL ride is organized by Outdoor Adventures. Bike to Work Week is May 16-20.
