Daily Nebraskan Editor Gibson Selected for Fulbright to South Korea

University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate Jenna Gibson, 2010-11 editor-in-chief of the Daily Nebraskan, UNL's student newspaper, will travel to South Korea to work as an English teaching assistant on a Fulbright Scholarship. She also plans to write for an English-language newspaper during her trip.

"I'm excited for the opportunity because I love language, gaining new perspectives and teaching others about my background," Gibson said, of Stillwater, Minn. She graduated May 7 with majors in news-editorial journalism, French and international studies, and a minor in Japanese. Gibson became interested in South Korea and its culture last year when she was a Lincoln International Networking Community mentor. Her partner was from Seoul, South Korea. Read more...

Emergency Exercise Provides Valuable Training Opportunity

A few seconds separated the fates of Paul Erickson and Sunil Narumalani during the May 11 terrorism exercise at UNL.

Playing professors in neighboring classrooms on the second floor of Oldfather Hall, both Erickson and Narumalani were leading lectures to keep volunteer "students" distracted.

"We didn't hear a thing. Then the door opened, a guy walked in and he started shooting," said Erickson, academic technology and middleware coordinator for Information Services. At the same moment, out in the hallway, a second gunman started firing a simulated shotgun. The sound of gunfire put Narumalani and a couple of his students into motion. Read more on Today@UNL.

Extreme weather
'Sunday With a Scientist' to Explore the World of Extreme Weather

The University of Nebraska State Museum hosts a Sunday with a Scientist program on extreme weather, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., May 15 at Morrill Hall.

The family-friendly event features scientists from the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, interactive activities and demonstrations to help visitors learn the basic causes of extreme weather phenomena, such as tornadoes, thunderstorms, hurricanes and blizzards. Visitors will also learn about the tools and methods scientists use to observe, study and predict extreme weather. Read more...

Bike to Work Week Rally is May 13

The UNL Wellness Initiative is organizing a faculty, staff and student bike ride that will join in a May 13, city-led celebration of Bike to Work Week. The bike/walk to work week rally ride will leave the Campus Rec Center (east entrance) at 7:50 a.m. Check in begins at 7:30 a.m.

The Lincoln rally begins at 8 a.m. at the Lancaster County/City of Lincoln building at 555 S. 10th St. The UNL ride is organized by Outdoor Adventures. Bike to Work Week is May 16-20.
