In the days leading up to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's entry into the Big Ten Conference on July 1, the Athletic Department's Randy York is posting a series of 10 N-Sider columns. This Countdown to the Big Ten series will culminate with an N-Sider on Big Ten Conference Commissioner Jim Delany on July 1. 'Tree of Life' opens today at the Ross
Director Terrence Malick's latest film, "The Tree of Life" opens Friday at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. Also continuing to play at the Ross is Woody Allen's critically acclaimed comedy "Midnight in Paris."
"The Tree of Life" was the Winner Palme d'Or at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, and tells the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life. Student group vies for True Hero grant
UNL's Students in Free Enterprise organization is in the running to win a True Hero Grant. The grant will be awarded by True Hero, Inc., a non-profit public charity that provides cash awards for community service projects. The Students in Free Enterprise entry in the contest aims to equip high school students on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation with skills to write grant requests that can help better their community.
The winning True Hero proposal is being decided through an online vote . The Nebraska Sife - Pine Ridge Project is in first place. Voting is open through June 30. Students in Free Enterprise is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing and implementing outreach projects to improve the quality of life of people in need. Study shows diets of low-income families often fall short in nutrition

More than seven in 10 low-income families in a new UNL study struggled to reach adequate levels of nutrition in their diet, researchers said. When asked to recall food choices from the previous day, only 28 percent of participating parents and caregivers reported meals with adequate amounts of nutrients like vitamins A and C, protein, calcium and iron, according to the study.
The work, which appears in the current edition of Family & Consumer Sciences Research Journal, measured more than 100 low-income families' eating patterns, and also examined their meals' nutritional value to determine how certain meal patterns could lead to more nutritious diets. The results showed that many nutritional issues could be tackled if the whole family ate together more often - especially at breakfast time, said Wanda Koszewski, UNL extension associate professor of nutrition and health sciences and the study's lead author.
