Campus events mark 9/11 anniversary
September 11, 2001 is a day that changed America, a generation and the world. Students at UNL will honor and remember the victims of that day's tragic and horrific events as well as the members of the U.S. Armed Forces from Nebraska who have lost their lives defending freedom since that day.
Beginning at 7 p.m., Sept. 11 in the Nebraska Union Plaza, a memorial ceremony will begin with the Presentation of Colors by the UNL ROTC Color Guard and playing of the National Anthem, remarks from Juan Franco, vice chancellor for student affairs; Lane Carr, president of the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska and others. UNL researchers deploy crime-fighting technology
University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers have developed a new community-policing tool that is generating attention around the country.
The mobile app called Proactive Police Patrol, or P3i, was developed jointly by UNL's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Lincoln Police Department and the University of Nebraska Public Policy Center. Read more about this application on Today@UNL.

Journalism students document stories in India
A summer study abroad experience has forever changed Maricia Guzman. A sophomore news-editorial major, Guzman was one of 19 students who ventured to India as part of the Journalism 391 "Mobile Media to India" class. As the students and three faculty members documented stories, some of the Indian youth started calling Guzman "didi" — which is Hindi for elder sister.
"I have tan skin, dark hair and brown eyes, so I did look Indian and the younger girls would call me 'didi,'" said Guzman. "It's a term of respect and endearment — as far as I'm concerned, I will always be a didi." Read more about this study abroad trip on Today@UNL.

Souto wins honorable mention in international mezzotint exhibition
Francisco Souto, associate professor of art, won honorable mention for "After Uno y el Universo II" at the 2011 International Mezzotint Festival. The festival was held at the Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts in Russia.
The international competition is dedicated exclusively to the arts of mezzotint printmaking. The competition featured more than 500 prints submitted by more than 90 artists representing 29 countries. Read more about this competition on Today@UNL.

'The Tree' and 'The Guard' open at the Ross
The family drama "The Tree" and dark Irish comedy "The Guard" open today at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.
"The Guard" stars Don Cheadle and Brendan Gleason as two mismatched police guards who take on an international drug ring. Gleason is Sergeant Gerry Boyle, an eccentric small-town cop with a confrontational personality and subversive sense of humor. Boyle is forced to at least feint interest as he deals with Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle), a humorless FBI agent assigned to a large drug trafficking in his small town.
Set in the harsh Australian outback, "The Tree" features Charlotte Gainsbourg as Dawn, a mother of four who struggles to care for her children after the death of her husband. Her 8-year-old daughter Simone (Morgana Davies) becomes convinced that her father is whispering to her through the leaves of the gargantuan fig tree that towers over the family home. Initially, the family is comforted by the presence. However the tree's enormous roots slowly begin to encroach on the home and threaten the family's fragile existence.
