Poser awarded Outstanding Contributor to Women in the Law

Dean Susan Poser received the Outstanding Contributor to Women in the Law Award from the Nebraska State Bar Association this week at the annual bar meeting. Presenting Poser with her award was Mary Wenzel, Chair of the Women and the Law section.

This award, presented annually by the Women and the Law Section of the Nebraska State Bar Association, recognizes the lifelong accomplishments of an individual who has directly contributed to the active integration and participation of women in the Nebraska system of justice as attorneys, judges and scholars. "Phenotypic evolution by gene duplication and changes of gene regulatory systems," will be presented by National Academy of Sciences' Masatoshi Nei, Pennsylvania State University at 4 p.m. in Beadle Center room E103. It is part of the Center for Biotechnology Big Ten National Academy of Sciences seminar series.

Gene duplication is one of the most important mutational mechanisms that generate new genetic variation in the evolutionary process, Nei said. Recent genomic studies have shown that genome duplication and segmental duplication are crucial in generating new species and new phenotypic characters such as the adaptive immune system in vertebrates and flower formation in angiosperms. 'Project No. 1' world premiere tonight

Theatrix, UNL's student-operated theater organization, is offering "Project No. 1," an original play based on concepts of identity and fear. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26-28 and 2 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Temple Building's Lab Theatre. Tickets are $6 and available online at UNL Theatre Tickets website or at the door (subject to availability).

"Project No. 1" is devised theater, a process where the script originates not from a single writer, but through a collaboration. Actors, under the direction of undergraduate Jake Denny, devised the script. Other students who helped develop the script are Jessie Tidball, Devon Schovanec, Rudy Jensen, Reagan Lopez, Adam Gutierrez and Jenny Holm. Read more about this performance on Today@UNL.

'Fright at the Museum' set for Oct. 26-27

The University of Nebraska State Museum "Fright at the Museum" event will be held from 5-9 p.m., Oct. 26-27 at Morrill Hall. This Halloween event marks the first of its kind sponsored by the museum for children and families.

The museum will be divided into "Three Tiers of Terror," giving visitors the opportunity to pick their level of fright. Each floor will have feature spook-tacular activities including hands-on games, live creatures of the night, candy giveaways, spooky surprises, music and more. MonstROSSity features free classic horror flicks

University Program Council is ready to jumpstart UNL's Halloween festivities on Oct. 26 with MonstROSSity: A Classic Double Feature at Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

The bone-chilling fright gets under way at 8 p.m. with "Night of the Living Dead" and continues with "Curse of the Mummy's Tomb." Admission is free for everyone. Read more about these screenings on Today@UNL.

Biochem Chair to Discuss Fuel Potential of Algae

Paul Black

Paul Black, professor and chair of the Department of Biochemistry and director of the Center for Biological Chemistry at UNL, will present "The Oily Side of Algae" at 3:30 p.m. in the Hardin Hall Auditorium, at 33rd and Holdrege streets.

His talk is part of the School of Natural Resources Fall Seminar Series that is exploring interdisciplinary connections. Black and his team are researching whether oil produced by algae can become a source of biomass for renewable fuels. Read more about this talk on Today@UNL.

Goodman to Present Nutrigenomics Seminar Series

At noon in the Nebraska East Union, Richard Goodman will discuss "Assessing the Potential Allergenicity of Food from Genetically Modified Insect Resistant Cowpeas, Golden Rice and Human Lactoferrin from Cow" as part of the Nebraska Gateway for Nutrigenomics Seminar Series.

Goodman joined UNL's Department of Food Science and Technology, in the Food Allergy Research and Resource Program in August 2004 as a research professor. He has published 35 peer reviewed papers, primarily on allergy and immunology. Read more about this seminar on Today@UNL.
