Takanishi to interview for Buffett Early Childhood director
Ruby Takanishi, the third of four finalists for the position of founding executive director of the Buffett Early Childhood Institute, will visit the University of Nebraska Feb. 27-28.
Takanishi is president of the Foundation for Child Development in New York City. She will attend open forums for faculty, staff, students and the public. The UNL session is 4 p.m. at the Van Brunt Visitors Center. A session at the University of Nebraska at Omaha is 3:30 p.m., Feb. 28 in room 412 of Roskens Hall. Read more about Takanishi in Today@UNL.
MyPLAN goes live to students today
UNL's new student-advising system goes online today. Called MyPLAN - My Personal Learning and Advising Network - the tool is a digital system available through a tab in Blackboard. It is designed to help document advising sessions electronically and to track and monitor student successes toward graduation.
Professional campus advisers have been using MyPLAN since December. Faculty advisers started using the system in January. Students gain access to MyPLAN today. Read more about MyPLAN in Today@UNL.
Swearer to help launch Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation
This week, Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, will officially launch the Born This Way Foundation to promote tolerance and empowerment among youth. Susan Swearer, a UNL professor of school psychology and an anti-bullying expert, will be among a select group of scholars to help lead the kickoff event.
The pop icon's new foundation tapped Swearer to lead one of five discussion topics during an all-day symposium on Feb. 29 as part of the foundation's official opening event at Harvard University. Swearer will be the point person on discussions about putting research into action in the classroom to stem the effects of bullying. Read more about this event in Today@UNL.
Online textiles sales spawn exhibit, seminar
"I-make/U-buy: Textiles in the Electronic Retail Age," a new exhibition of original work developed for online sales, will be on display Feb. 27 through March 30 at UNL's Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery
The exhibition features artists Anne Burton, Audio Helkuik, Amy Morin Quinn, Mary Pattavina, Eulanda Sanders and Rachel Suntop, all of whom work with online sales to market original work that has a textile base, is of high quality and occupies a unique market niche. Each is an alumna or faculty member of UNL's Department of Textiles, Clothing and Design. Read more about this exhibition and seminar in Today@UNL.

Technology agent Leon Castro will cover the basics of patent searching in a noon, Feb. 27 "Thinkers & Tinkerers" discussion at the NET Building, 1800 N. 33rd St.
"Thinkers & Tinkerers" is a monthly series hosted by NUtech Ventures staff members discussing a variety of issues related to innovation and entrepreneurship. Sessions are at noon with lunch provided to the first 40 people who attend each session. Watch a webcast of this event.
