Course offers cross-cultural mentoring experience

UNL's Cross Cultural Mentoring course provides undergraduate and graduate students with an opportunity for intensive work with a refugee, immigrant and/or minority high school student.

UNL students assist protégés with transitioning from one culture to another, engaging in and completing high school, learning problem-solving techniques unique to the U.S., and accessing community resources. Read more about this program in Today@UNL.

Richard Graham

Richie Graham, associate professor in the University Libraries, shows the note he found inside a Rumanian language handbook.

Note from 1963 inspires Graham to track down writer

In 1963, a high school student left a little pink note in a Rumanian language handbook in Love Library; he wondered how often the book was used. Now we know. Nearly 50 years later, that little note surfaced, and libraries professor Richie Graham feels pretty good about it.

Graham, who does research on the government's use of cartoons and comics, found the note in a 1943 paperback issued by the U.S. War Department titled "Rumanian: A guide to the spoken language." The book was illustrated by Walt Kelly, who went on to fame as the writer of the comic "Pogo." It was apparently issued for World War II era soldiers. Read more about this find in Today@UNL.
