Seventh Fulbright winner to study mummies, parasites in Chile

Nicole Searcey will spend 2013 far away from Nebraska on a Fulbright fellowship, analyzing ancient human remains and their intestinal remains on an archeological research site in Chile.

After graduating from the UNL in December with a degree in biological sciences and a minor in English, Searcey will use a Fulbright fellowship to travel to Chile for 10 months to research the parasitology of ancient civilizations. A native of Tecumseh, she is the seventh Fulbright student announced at UNL this spring. Read more about Searcey and this Fulbright in Today@UNL.

Innovation Lab's student presentations are today

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering's Innovation Lab will hold a showcase of senior design projects, 4 to 6 p.m. today on the second floor of the Schorr Center. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.

Students enrolled in Computer Science and Engineering's senior design course developed the projects this semester. Each project was sponsored by a company or UNL faculty member. The course is taught by Computer Science and Engineering faculty Sharad Seth and Mehmet Can Vuran. Read more about these presentations in Today@UNL.

Lovejoy to discuss biodiversity and climate change

Conservation biologist Thomas Lovejoy will present "A Wild Solution for Climate Change: Interactions with the Biosphere" at 1 p.m. in the Hardin Hall auditorium. Lovejoy's talk, sponsored by the UNL's School of Natural Resources and School of Biological Sciences, is free and open to the public.

His talk will focus on the many small ways in which climate change is currently affecting biological diversity, and what this says about the potential for bigger impacts on humans, wildlife and ecosystems, as temperatures continue to rise. Lovejoy believes that fostering biological diversity will help remove carbon dioxide, a main greenhouse gas, from the atmosphere. Read more about this talk in Today@UNL.

 

Entrepreneurship Bootcamp

Applicants sought for 'boot camp' on entrepreneurship, technology

NUTech Ventures is offering a weeklong "Boot Camp for Entrepreneurship and Technology," May 14-18. The session is designed for students and post-doctorates. Registration is due by May 4.

The boot camp is designed to help individuals turn an idea into a high-technology business. Topics to be covered include business model generation, customer development, team building, legal basics and financing. Read more about this opportunity in Today@UNL.

UNL launches Nebraska App

UNL has launched the Nebraska App, a suite of mobile applications that makes essential university resources available on mobile devices. Students can check grades, access course content and browse the course catalog. They can access the public directory and get in touch instantly, keep tabs on Husker sports, find places on the campus map, stay informed with the latest campus news, watch videos, and even listen to podcasts of popular lectures in iTunesU.

"UNL is moving services to the where the students are in terms of devices and network access"," said Mark Askren, Chief Information Officer. "Students now have a much more powerful connection to UNL via their mobile device." Read more about Nebraska App in Today@UNL.
