UNL engineering grad students win national competition

A team of graduate students from UNL's Surgical Robotics Lab won first place in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' 2012 Student Mechanism and Robot Design Competition, Graduate Student Robotics category, with their project, "Miniature In Vivo Surgical Robot for Single-Incision Surgery."

Mechanical and materials engineering students Jack Mondry of Orlando, Fla., Joseph Bartels of Wauneta, Thomas Frederick of Omaha, and Eric Markvicka of Ravenna presented their creation at the Chicago event in mid-August. Their platform for R-LESS (robotic laparo endoscopic single site) surgery aims to streamline the crowded operating table while still providing the dexterity necessary to perform general surgical procedures. NU ranks 20th in licensing revenue

NuTech Ventures

The University of Nebraska ranked 20th among U.S. universities in revenue generated from licensing activity for university-developed inventions and technologies in 2011, according to the annual survey of 157 universities by the Association of University Technology Managers.

University of Nebraska licensing revenue grew to more than $16.7 million in 2011, up from about $3.7 million in 2010. Figures are for the entire University of Nebraska system, including UNL (NUtech Ventures) and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNeMed). Read more about this growth in Today@UNL.

"Maize Endosperm: A System to Investigate Complex Biological Processes," will be presented by Brian A. Larkins from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. A reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. in E103 Beadle Center with the talk to follow. The event is open to the public.

UNL launches Nebraska App

UNL has launched the Nebraska App, a suite of mobile applications that makes essential university resources available on mobile devices. Students can check grades, access course content and browse the course catalog. They can access the public directory and get in touch instantly, keep tabs on Husker sports, find places on the campus map, stay informed with the latest campus news, watch videos, and even listen to podcasts of popular lectures in iTunesU.
