MORRILL HALL, SUN 1:30 - 4:30PM

Morrill Hall's 'Sunday Scientist' explores biofuels

The University of Nebraska State Museum's next Sunday with a Scientist program for children and families will explore biofuels. The program will be from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at Morrill Hall, south of 14th and Vine Streets on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln City Campus.

Researchers from UNL will provide hands-on activities to help visitors understand the production of biofuels made from plants and algae. Nebraska is a major producer of corn ethanol and corn stover. Corn stover is a waste product that can be converted to cellulosic ethanol. By using farming waste products, we can avoid the conflict between food and fuel, increase the value of current crops, ensure future farm income, and provide a more sustainable alternative to Middle Eastern oil. 475-RIDE: Your safe ride to the finish line

Happy Cab

475-RIDE is a cab service that can provide student with a ride home they are in an unsafe situation and have exhausted all other methods of transportation. The program resumed Sept. 12. The service will run continuously from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

This year ASUN Student Government has switched the cab company being used for this service and will now be working with Happy Cab. There are five cab brands under the Happy Cab company and will be designated by a checkered flag. The program approves only cabs with these flags, so users will not be able to use the service if they get in another cab. Read more about 475-RIDE in Today@UNL.

UNL student track-spike invention leads to potential business

If necessity is the mother of invention, then track athletes who also are engineering students will look for a solution to a perennial problem: The difficulty in changing the small metal spikes on the bottom of their running shoes.

UNL mechanical engineering major Alex Adams developed a new spike-changing system that helps wearers more easily remove and tighten the tiny screw-in pieces. His invention has led to the start of a new venture, Blue Inventor LLC. He's chief executive officer, and three UNL student colleagues are also involved in the startup business: Walter Bircher of Omaha, Shawn Bernard of Benkelman and Chauncey Thomas Brinn of Otsego, Mich. Read more about this invention in Today@UNL.
