Gay to give Nebraska Lecture on football and physics
Football fans appreciate tackling, blocking and high-impact movements for their playmaking ability. But the reason those plays work – and the resulting collisions are risky – comes down to physics.
During the April 5 Nebraska Lecture, "Football: Its Physics and Future," UNL physics professor Timothy Gay will discuss the history of American football, the physics of the large forces that occur on the field and the inherent dangers, attempts to ban the sport as early as 1900, how the current climate could lead to changes in the game, and UNL and national research efforts to understand and mitigate injuries. 'New Artists Festival' closes out Theatrix season
Four new scripts written by students will be featured in the "New Artists Festival," the final production of Theatrix's 2012-2013 season. The New Artists Festival offers students in the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film the chance to write, direct, perform in, design and manage new scripts. The 2013 festival includes three 20-minute scripts and one full-length play.
Student directors for the festival are undergraduate theater and film majors Emma Gruhl, William Fischer, Dominic Ciafolo and Fred Drenkow. The performances are divided into two shows on separate evenings. Read more these performances in Today@UNL.

Dash is keynote in Ethnic Studies' 'Spring Celebration'
The Institute for Ethnic Studies' "Spring Celebration 2013" will feature a keynote lecture by novelist and filmmaker Julie Dash. The talk, "Find the Good and Praise It," is 7 p.m. in the Sheldon Museum of Art auditorium. A book signing follows the lecture. The event is free and open to the public.
Dash is the Bob Allison Media Professor in the Department of Communications at Wayne State University in Detroit. Her film, "Daughters of the Dust," will be screened at 2 p.m. April 5 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. Dash will also lead a question and answer session following the 2 p.m. screening. Fritz wins SPE Imagemaker Award
Dana Fritz, professor of art and art history, received the Society for Photographic Education's Imagemaker Award at a March 7-10 conference in Chicago.
The award goes to an artist presenting for the first time as an image maker at the SPE national conference, who shows exceptional promise and outstanding achievement, evidenced by a high ranking by the peer review panel. Read more about Fritz and this award in Today@UNL.

Prairie Schooner celebrates 10th anniverary of book prize
Prairie Schooner, UNL's literary journal, will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its annual Book Prize Series with an event from 7 to 9 p.m. at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum. The event is free and open to the public.
The celebration will feature introductory remarks by Hilda Raz and Peggy Shumaker, the founders of the Book Prize Series. Karen Brown and Susan Blackwell Ramsey, the 2011 Book Prize winners will also present readings. The event will include special performances by UNL's ceramics and music composition departments. UNL hosts CIC's Academic Leadership Program seminar
UNL is hosting the Committee on Institutional Cooperation's Academic Leadership Program, April 4-6. This is the last of three seminars and features 80 fellows and liaisons from Big Ten universities. The seminar theme is "Money Management and Strategies." It includes sessions that discuss the topic in the context of higher education.
"The Academic Leadership Program is the CIC's flagship professional development program and has a long history of producing future deans, provosts and presidents," said Lance C.
