Degrees granted to some 2,750 at University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln granted degrees to more than 2,750 students at commencement exercises May 3 and 4 in separate ceremonies for baccalaureate, graduate and law degrees. This marks the second-largest graduating class in UNL history, behind only the approximately 2,800 in May 2012.

The graduates are from 44 states and 36 countries. Read a full list of graduates.

Employees make commencement change a positive experience

Faculty, staff and administrators helped turn disappointment into excitement after weather shifted UNL's May 4 undergraduate commencement from a signature event within Memorial Stadium to a more personal experience inside the Hawks Championship Indoor Center.

Chancellor Harvey Perlman's decision to move the graduation event indoors was announced at 6:30 a.m. One hour later, students started to report to the Hawks Center to pick up diplomas. Read more about commencement in Today@UNL.

Water for Food experts eye transforming scientific knowledge into ag practices, policy

Much of the scientific and technical knowledge needed to address the world's burgeoning food needs already exists. The challenge now is to get it into small farmers' hands in a way they can use it, and to convince governments to change policies to make it more feasible for them to do so.

That's one of the themes emerging as the fifth annual global Water for Food Conference opened May 6 at the Cornhusker Marriott Hotel. The fifth annual conference is hosted by the Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Institute at the University of Nebraska and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Read more about the first day of the 2013 Water for Food Conference in Today@UNL.

Sheldon hosts room-sized instrument

On May 7 at 7 p.m., "A Very Deep Saxophone and a Very Long Guitar" performance will take place in one of the Sheldon upper galleries. This experimental music and video performance by UNL associate professors Damon Lee and Jeff Thompson will turn the gallery into a room-sized instrument.

The performance is part of "The Naked Museum" 50th anniversary celebration at the Sheldon Museum of Art. For the months of May and June, Sheldon's collection of 12,000 objects will be placed in storage to focus on its greatest artwork: the museum's landmark Philip Johnson–designed building.
