Preparing entomology (insect) projects for Lancaster County Super Fair can be confusing and can seem complicated. Help is available from Jody Green, extension educator and urban entomologist, for youth who are interested in preparing an insect collection or one of the many other 4-H entomology projects available to exhibit at Super Fair. She also can help 4-H’ers prepare for the State Fair Insect Identification Contest.

Email Jody at jgreen17@unl.edu to let her know of your interest in attending an insect workshop late spring/summer on a Saturday afternoon. Include in the email topics of interest and any Saturdays your 4-H’ers are not available from May through July.

Some potential workshop topics:
• Discuss projects for the fair, requirements and brainstorm ideas.
• Collecting field trip to collect insects for fair classes 1-3.
• Workshop about identification with presentation on insect orders.
• Macrophotography workshop for youth with cameras or cell phones.
• A session to help identify, pin and label already collected insects.
• Entomophagy workshop about insects as food; cook, bake insects and eat them.
• Practice session for anyone planning to enter the State Fair Insect Identification Contest.

Jody also has extra pins, flat styrofoam to pin and spread specimens, triangle points and some glass vials available to 4-H members. Below are links providing clarification and requirements for Super Fair projects as well as some additional links.
