Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) is a fully funded overseas summer study program, unique in its goal to support more diverse students to learn languages that are critical to America’s national security and economic prosperity. Applicants are selected based on their plans to apply their language skills to their future academic or professional pursuits in any field. The CLS Program offers summer instruction at overseas institutions for the following languages: Azerbaijani, Bangla, Hindi, Indonesian, Persian, Portuguese, Swahili, Turkish, Urdu, Arabic, Korean, Russian, Chinese and Japanese. The first nine languages listed are open to students at all language levels, including beginners. Arabic, Korean and Russian requires one year of prior study, and Chinese and Japanese requires two years of prior study. A virtual program called CLS Spark is also available for Arabic, Chinese, and Russian at the beginning level.
CLS applications are currently open. Students will have until November 15, 2022, at 7:00 pm Central Time to complete the application. Finalists will be announced in March.
