Courses for Students with an Interest in Law

Have you worked with an advisee who expressed curiosity about attending law school? Students at UNL can explore law and the legal profession as undergrads. Four BLAW courses are taught by College of Law faculty with two typically offered in the fall and two in the spring. These courses give students insights into what law classes are like as well as give them some clarity on whether the law school is a good direction for them.

BLAW courses are offered through the College of Business but are open to all undergraduate students who meet the prerequisite requirements (Junior standing/3.25 GPA), regardless of major. Students can take the BLAW courses as part of their declared minor or major or they can take these courses as standalone options.

Spring 2024:

BLAW 377 – Introduction to Corporate Compliance
Examines relationships between corporate governance, risk and compliance.

BLAW 378 – Legislation and Regulation
Introduction to legislation, the structure of the U.S. government, the sources of governmental policy, and the various factors that influence policy and related regulations.

Fall 2024:

BLAW 375 – Common Law in Contemporary Society
An examination of the continuing influence of the common law on the resolution of contemporary legal issues.

BLAW 376 – Civil and Criminal Litigation
Examines civil and criminal justice system and key legal concepts that frame the operations of these systems.

Additionally, an exploratory course, taught by Dean Richard Moberly (College of Law dean), is available each fall to all undergraduate students. Any student interested in learning more about law as a career path can register for the following:

CASC 140: Introduction to Law and the Legal Profession
An introduction to legal education, the legal system, possible legal careers, and what it takes to be admitted to law school.

Full course descriptions are available in the undergraduate catalogue. We’d love to see more students who are considering law school take these courses to explore their interest and learn more about pursuing law as a career.
