Peace Corps Prep Celebration & “Applying to Peace Corps” Session - Dec. 1

Peace Corp Prep
Peace Corp Prep

The Peace Corps Prep (PC Prep) program will host a lunch and a brief certificate ceremony on Friday, December 1 from 12:30-1:15 pm, to celebrate the students earning PC Prep certificates in Fall 2023. Then the three graduating students will share their experiences with the Peace Corps application, invitation, and clearance processes from 1:15-2:00 pm. Interested students, faculty, and staff are welcome to join for all or part of this event, via Zoom or in Pioneers Room A, Cather Dining Complex.

The Peace Corps, established in 1961, “brings together skilled, committed Volunteers with welcoming host communities for service opportunities in more than 60 countries. Volunteers live and work side by side with community members on locally prioritized projects, building relationships, exchanging cultures and knowledge, and helping transform lives for generations.” This post-graduation experience lasts 27 months: 3 months of training followed by two years of service. Volunteers work in one of six sectors (Education, Health, Environment, Agriculture, Youth in Development, or Community Economic Development), and may also pursue secondary projects. While the Peace Corps uses the term “volunteer,” expenses are covered by the U.S. government and volunteers receive a variety of other benefits.

Peace Corps Prep is an undergraduate program that combines university coursework, hands-on experiences, and professional development opportunities to prepare students for working in international development. Benefits include mentorship, intercultural and professional resources, and study abroad scholarships. Upon completion of the program, students receive a certificate directly from the Peace Corps and a competitive edge when applying for Peace Corps service. All undergraduate students in good standing are eligible for PC Prep and should apply at least two semesters prior to graduation. Students from traditionally underrepresented communities are strongly encouraged to apply. International students may complete the PC Prep program, but applicants serving in the Peace Corps must be U.S. citizens.
