Aging is Our Future!

In previous issues of this newsletter, you have learned about the growth in the aging population. Such facts as the number of older adults today (55.5 million, 65+) and in 2060 (88.8 million, 65+), to the realization that in 2029, all of the baby boomers will be 65, the demographic shift we have been touting is now a reality and is a part of our future and yours.

For your students who have a mild or strong interest in studying aging (gerontology for those more inclined), our department is offering several courses this summer and in the fall that can qualify for the minor or certificate in gerontology. Both are 18-hour programs. The advantage of the certificate is students enroll in a 156-hour practicum in order to gain real world experience. Anecdotal comments from our students suggest this can be a game changer for admission to graduate and professional schools along with securing employment after graduating from UNL.
