ETHN/MODL 420: Great Latin American Novels in Translation

Novels are a tremendous modern technology that allows us to intellectually immerse ourselves into a foreign brain, into a radically different worldview that heightens our sense of solidarity and collective awareness. In this seminar we will immerse ourselves in seven exceptional Latin American novels (translated into English). We will also learn about the history of the novel, the history of Latin America, about Black, Indigenous, feminist, and anti-capitalist poetics. By the end of the semester each student will turn in a research paper focusing on one great Latin American novel in which they will study the historical in context in which the novelist was writing as well as the critical reception of the novel by scholars.

Taught by Dr. Luis Othoniel Rosa, on Fridays, 2:30-5:20pm, in English. This course can count toward the ETHN major and minor and the Latin American Studies minor. Prerequisites: Upper level ETHN or MODL course and/or literature courses. Students who are interested, but do not meet the prerequisites, should contact the instructor.
