The University Singers and Chamber Singers in the Glenn Korff School of Music are on a choral trip to France May 14-24.
They are performing at extraordinary concert venues including the Gothic Beauvais Cathedral, Rouen Gothic Cathedral, the American Cemetery at Normandy, Eglise Notre Dame l’Assomption, St. Michel, St. Vincent Cathedral, Le Mans Cathedral, Chartres Cathedral, and more. Their trip also includes a visit to Monet’s Gardens at Giverny.
The trip was supported by the Hixson-Lied Endowment, Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts and Glenn Korff School of Music.
The University Singers, UNL’s historic flagship choral ensemble, study and perform music from the 13th century through the present, including works written especially for and premiered by them. The University Singers, under the direction of Hixson-Lied Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities Peter Eklund, have performed repeatedly for state conventions of the Nebraska Music Educators Association, regional conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, and regional and national conferences of the nation’s professional music education association, MENC (now NAfME).
The Chamber Singers, UNL’s newest choral ensemble, fits a much-needed niche in the teaching of choral music to our students in the 21st century. Under the direction of Assistant Professor of Music in Choral Activities Marques L.A. Garrett, the Chamber Singers focus on small-ensemble choral and vocal literature from the Medieval times to 1650 and on new choral and vocal ensemble music by living and emerging composers.
