Oct. 8: Wind Ensemble. 7:30 p.m. Kimball Recital Hall. Tickets: $5 general and $3 students and seniors. This event will also be webcast. Visit http://music.unl.edu for the live link. The Wind Ensemble begins their 2014-2015 season with a study of contrasts, juxtaposing the expected and the unexpected. The concert will have a distinctly American flavor with the works of Ives, Copland, Newman, Forte, and Bernstein seasoned with a dash of international flair from Stravinsky and Schmidt. From a gentle ballad inspired by the poetry of Leah Goldberg to a polka composed to accompany the dancing of elephants in the Ringling Bros., Barnum and Bailey Circus (choreographed by George Balanchine), from a good old-fashioned march to a sonic homage to French Impressionist painting, this program has something for everyone.
Oct. 9: Schoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire." 7:30 p.m. Kimball Recital Hall. This event will also be webcast. Visit http://music.unl.edu for the live link. Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire (1912) is a landmark of early 20th century music. This setting of 21 poems by Albert Giraud follows Pierrot, a clowning character from the Italian commedia dell’arte theatrical tradition, as he engages life’s largest issues (love, religion, violence, regret) through the exaggerated lens of post-romantic expressionism. The chamber ensemble for this work, conducted by Glenn Korff School of Music Professor Jeff McCray, includes Larson Professor John Bailey (flute and piccolo), Associate Professor Clark Potter (violin and viola), Associate Professor Karen Becker (cello), master’s student Lucas Willsie (clarinet and bass clarinet), and DMA alumnus Kurt Knecht (piano). These performers accompany Professor Donna Harler-Smith, who presents Pierrot’s most infamous innovation: Sprechstimme, a vocal technique that is neither singing nor speaking, but something between. This haunting “recitation” of Giraud’s poetry, cast against the ever-changing colors provided by the small ensemble and set in Schoenberg’s unique tonal language, creates unique challenges for the performers and a musical experience for the audience unlike anything ever heard before.
