Oct. 6: Hans Sturm, double bass. 7:30 p.m. Westbrook Recital Hall Rm. 119. Free and open to the public. Sturm is associate professor of double bass and jazz studies and area head for strings in the Glenn Korff School of Music.

Oct. 6: Sarah Arneson, guest artist. 7:30 p.m. Kimball Recital Hall. Free and open to the public.

Oct. 7: Wind Ensemble. 7:30 p.m. Kimball Recital Hall. Tickets: $5 general and $3 students/seniors. This concert will be webcast. Visit http://music.unl.edu the day of the concert for the link. An endangered species, a chanson by Ockeghem, a poem by Rilke, a private remark by Aaron Copland, an exclamation by a Buddhist monk, and a rare specimen of organum by Pérotin: these are the seeds of inspiration from which the music came to life. Karel Husa, Kathryn Salfelder, Morton Lauridsen, Wayne Oquin, David Maslanka, and Ron Nelson each have crafted a facet of a program that reflects the broad spectrum of the human condition. Join us for an emotional journey as the UNL Wind Ensemble opens its 2015-2016 concert season.

Oct. 9-23: Hey, Kids! Comics! Eisentrager-Howard Gallery in Richards Hall. Curated by Bob Hall and Richie Graham. Opening reception on Friday, Oct. 9 from 5-7 p.m. in the gallery. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 12:30-4:30 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public.

Oct. 14: Jazz Orchestra & Big Band. 7:30 p.m. Kimball Recital Hall. Tickets: $5 general and $3 students/seniors. The UNL Jazz Orchestra, directed by Paul Haar, is the university’s showcase jazz organization and one of the Glenn Korff School of Music’s most visible performing groups. UNL Big Band, directed by Patrick Brown, is a vital component of the UNL jazz curriculum.

Oct. 15: Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist Yasser Musa public lecture. 5:30 p.m. Richards Hall Rm. 14. Free. Musa creates multimedia art addressing contemporary social and political issues. His work has been exhibited at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Kaoshiung Museum of Art (Tiawan,) Art Museum of the Americas (Washington D.C.,) Contemporary Design Museum (Costa Rica,) La Capella (BCN Spain,) 8th Havana Biennial (Cuba,) Tijuana Biennial (Mexico) among other international venues.

Oct. 15: University Singers. 7:30 p.m. Newman Center, 320 N. 16th St. Free and open to the public. This concert will be webcast. Visit http://music.unl.edu the day of the concert for the link. University Singers is a show choir and UNL’s premiere and historic flagship large choral ensemble directed by Peter Eklund. They present the finest and most versatile choral singers in the entire University.

Oct. 22: Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist Stella Ebner public lecture. 5:30 p.m. Richards Hall, Rm. 15. Free. Ebner is a printmaker. She received her BFA from the University of Minnesota and her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Exhibitions of her work include: the Bronx Museum of Arts, the International Print Center New York (New York City), the Print Center (Philadelphia), Kala Art Institute (Berkeley), and SFMOMA Artists Gallery (San Francisco). Ebner has held residencies at the Lower East Side Printshop in New York City, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Studio Program in New York City and Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, California.

Oct. 22: Trans-Nebraska Players. 7:30 p.m. Kimball Recital Hall. Free and open to the public. The Trans-Nebraska Players is a 5-piece chamber ensemble from three different Nebraska collegiate institutions including the Glenn Korff School of Music’s David C. Neely and Clark Potter.

Join the Chiara with guests John Bailey, flute, and Mark Clinton, piano, as they play a delicious program of late-romantic treats, including a rare string trio performance of the Dohnányi Serenade with members of the Chiara.

Oct. 25: Chamber Singers. 4 p.m. Sheldon Museum of Art. Free and open to the public. The University Chamber Singers, directed by Eph Ehly, are UNL’s premiere vocal chamber ensemble.

Oct. 25: Kate Butler, mezzo soprano. 5 p.m. Ebenezer Church at 8th and B sts. Free and open to the public. Butler is associate professor of music and voice area head in the Glenn Korff School of Music.

Oct. 26: University of Nebraska Brass Quintet. 7:30 p.m. Kimball Recital Hall. Tickets: $5 general and $3 students/seniors.

Oct. 28: Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist Danny Fingeroth public lecture. 5:30 p.m. Richards Hall Rm. 15. Free. Fingeroth was a longtime writer and editor for Marvel Comics, where he worked on characters including Spider-Man, Iron Man and the Avengers. He has also written comics for anthologies including Studs Terkel’s Working and Yiddishkeit. He was the creator and editor of Write Now magazine, the premier publication for comics and pop culture writers, and, with Mike Manley, wrote How to Create Comics From Script to Print. He was Director of Education at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) in New York, and currently serves as a programming consultant, organizing and moderating panels and events with creators and academics for Wizard World Comics Conventions.

Oct. 31: Leone Buyse, guest artist. 7:30 p.m. Westbrook Recital Hall Rm. 119. Free and open to the public. Flutist Leone Buyse relinquished her principal position with the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops in 1993 to pursue a more active solo and teaching career after 22 years as an orchestral musician. She is the Mullen Professor of Flute at Rice University in Houston, Texas.
