Using technology to help families

U R Parent app
U R Parent app

Technology is an important vehicle for helping us carry out the CEHS mission. The “U R Parent” app for iPads and iPhones is a great example. Developed by The Learning Child Team—UNL Extension educators and early childhood Extension faculty in Child, Youth and Family Studies—the U R Parent app is a parenting resource for parents of infants.

Built by EdMedia at UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, U R Parent takes parents through “ages and stages” of the first year, health and safety issues, and offers special parenting tips. Parents can add their child’s immunization records, photos and personal data. It can also serve as an electronic baby book for parents. A special feature provides resources for military families. The vision of the app is to reach all parents with key information that can help their family unit thrive and support their children as they grow. It’s a free download from the Apple app store. Members of The Learning Child Team are currently working on content for children ages 1-5.

More than 4,300 Nebraska families and early childhood professionals are served in this joint outreach effort of CYAF and IANR through UNL Extension Services and 4-H. For more information on the U R Parent app, visit http://www.extension.unl.edu/web/child.
