Shelley Billig from REL Central at Marzano Research will introduce the topic and describe the work of the Rural Education Research Alliance. Jim Shymansky and Charles Matthews from the University of Missouri-St. Louis will summarize work with local and regional groups of K-6 teachers to develop a strategy that utilizes adapted science inquiry activities to build student reading, writing, and language arts skills while learning science. Thomas Farmer from Virginia Commonwealth University will focus on issues in the delivery of special education services for students with disabilities in rural school districts, building on a series of studies conducted by the IES-funded National Research Center on Rural Education Support.
