Five faculty members from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders will be among the speakers featured at the Nebraska Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSLHA) fall convention Thursday-Friday, Sept. 14-15, in Lincoln.
The two-day convention will be held at the Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel. Presentations throughout the convention fall into one of three areas – audiology, medical speech-language pathology, and school speech-language pathology.
Assistant professor Angela Dietsch and lecturer Katie Brennan will each lead sessions Thursday afternoon. Dietsch will address assessment and treatment strategies for swallowing difficulties during her interactive session. Meanwhile, Brennan’s session will discuss best practices in family-centered intervention for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, with a focus on inter-professional collaboration.
Friday morning, associate professor of practice Kristy Weissling will join Miechelle McKelvey, a professor at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, to discuss augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) assessment principles for adult and child populations. That afternoon, associate professor of practice Stephen Boney will lead a discussion about audiology patients with long-standing profound hearing loss who begin experiencing auditory hallucinations. In addition, research assistant professor Jacqueline Huscroft-D’Angelo will join Rebecca Miller, owner of FixLexia, and Elizabeth Andreasen, a speech-language pathologist, to discuss dyslexia evaluation and intervention with a focus on implications for speech-language pathologists.
Along with the formal presentations throughout the two-day schedule, a poster session will be held Thursday evening, with faculty and students from UNL’s Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders represented on five of the 12 posters.
