Grad Student Teaching Fellows Program + STEM Teaching class (Fall 2018)

The College of Engineering is pleased the announce two new initiatives for COE graduate students on teaching and learning, under the direction of Dr. Tareq Daher. Please encourage your graduate students (1) to apply to the inaugural class of COE Graduate Student Teaching Fellows, and (2) to enroll in the STEM Teaching class this fall.

(1) UNL COE Graduate Student Teaching Fellows Program

The College of Engineering's Graduate Student Teaching Fellows program is a one-year competitive program that prepares graduate students that are currently (or will be) teaching at the postsecondary level.

This program allows graduate students to engage with evidence-based teaching methods applicable to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Graduate students will learn to become effective teachers through active participation in a peer-observation program, learning evidence-based course design and development, structured discussions with faculty mentors, and taking part in a course focused on teaching. Upon completion of the program, participants are awarded a non-degree certificate of completion and named UNL College of Engineering Graduate Student Teaching Fellow.

We are currently accepting applications for the 2018 - 2019 cohort. For complete details on the program and to apply please visit https://engineering.unl.edu/gateaching/

(2) “STEM Teaching” Course

ECEN 895-001 “Special Topics: STEM Teaching” (Fall 2018)
Instructor: Dr. Tareq Daher
Date/Time/Location: Fridays, 1-4 PM; W213 Nebraska Hall

This graduate level course is designed to provide training for graduate students who are currently or will be teaching at the postsecondary level. Evidence-based teaching methods applicable to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) will be investigated, and a learner-based pedagogy will be used to engage those in the course to experience STEM Practices. The common element of problem-solving is emphasized across all STEM disciplines, allowing students to discover, explore and apply critical thinking skills as they learn.

This course provides a forum to discuss issues of learning, teaching, and assessment. Students will a) develop a unit on Canvas that includes learning goals, lecture, activities, and assessments, b) teaching philosophy, and c) engage with technologies that support and enhance teaching and learning.

For questions about this course, please call Dr. Daher at (402) 472-4761 or email tareq.daher@unl.edu
