Jian Wang, associate professor of mechanical and materials engineering, was selected to receive the Materials Today 2018 Rising Star Award in the Materials Genome division. The awards will be presented at Rice University in Houston, Texas, Sept. 27-28.

Aaron Ediger, a graduate student in electrical and computer engineering, has received the Graduate Directed Energy Scholarship in High Energy Laser and High Power Microwave Technologies from the Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS).
This program offers partial scholarships of up to $10,000 for the 2018-19 school year. Students are expected to be interested in pursuing or are currently studying DE technology in the areas of high-energy lasers and high-power microwaves and must have been published in the Journal of Directed Energy and made presentations at DEPS meetings.
Ediger, who is advised by Professor Dennis Alexander and does research at the Center for Electro-Optics and Functionalized Surfaces (CEFS), said the scholarship is a validation of his academic work and research.
“The DEPS considers itself the premier organization for the exchange of information on the development and application of directed energy, and I am very grateful that DEPS considers the research I perform important enough to award me this scholarship,” Ediger said.

Electrical and computer engineering graduate students Josue Campos do Prado (second prize) and Mohamed Al-Ashery (third prize), earned Best Paper awards at the 50th North American Power Symposium, Sept. 9-11 in Fargo, North Dakota.
