MAXIMA is an intensive six-week summer REU in interdisciplinary mathematics, run jointly by the Macalester Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science (MSCS), and the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA). The program will be hosted at the IMA, located on the University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus.

Twelve students will work in teams of four on an open research problem in applied mathematics. The topics for summer 2014 are smartphone activity tracking, computer vision and online communities. UMN researchers have posed these problems from biostatistics and computer science and engineering. Each team will advised by an MSCS faculty member and will also be mentored by an IMA postdoctoral fellow.

The application process is now open. The program is open to full-time undergraduates majoring in mathematics or a related field at a US college or university, as well as international students studying in the United States. A $3,000 stipend, travel expenses and room and board are provided.

All materials must be received by February 21, 2014. To apply, vist: http://www.ima.umn.edu/reu.
