A student in CEHS Family Science/Criminal Justice is beginning to work on an internship project for the Spring semester, and would like to collaborate with a CSE student in designing a database.
NDCS, Probation, and Parole all have extensive “lists” (word documents, brochures, etc) of registered providers for services such as mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence programs, vocational training, housing, and other services. Yet, there is no inclusive database for any of the information to be accessed. It is only available by individual officers/workers searching Google or reading through hundreds of pages of these lists. This is particularly complicated in areas where there are hundreds of service providers, but poses an additional problem in areas where little service is available.
This project would entail creating a searchable database that could be used by these—and possibly other—agencies to provide more effective and seamless services to their clients. This will involve:
1. Determining the information that would be needed.
2. Gathering the available information into an organized format
3. Designing a database that allows the entry of this information
4. Completing data entry of information available from dozens of sources
Computer science majors looking for an internship project or other academic project might be interested in helping to facilitate the design of the database. Otherwise a simple Microsoft Access format will be used, which can be utilized later to create a more sophisticated product if desired.
