Shred your documents to protect against plagarism and identity theft

The Computer Science and Engineering Department has contracted with a local vendor to provide shredding services for students, faculty, and staff. Locking shred bins have been placed in Rooms 15, 258, and 354 of Avery Hall.

Students are encouraged to deposit any work that could be copied or used by another student into one of the locking bins. The Academic Integrity Policy specifically prohibits allowing others to copy one’s work. For this reason, all students should safely dispose of their papers by depositing them in the locking bins, thus protecting themselves against plagiarism or any allegation of dishonesty.

Faculty and staff should discard in the shred bins any documents with student information that cannot be returned to the student, in order to prevent identity theft and other types of fraud.

Only office paper with confidential information should be deposited into the shred bins. Staples and paper clips do not need to be removed, but no other foreign objects should be deposited into the shred bins. Documents that are not confidential and do not need to be shredded should be placed in a regular recycling container because the department is charged by the pound for all documents deposited into the shred bins.

When full, shred bins will be emptied by the vendor into the shredding hopper of a state of the art document destruction vehicle, which safely destroys on-site all documents in the bins.

If you observe someone tampering with a shred bin, contact University Police immediately at (402) 472-2222.

For questions about the shredding service or to report a problem (such as a full container), please contact CSE Systems Administration in Avery Hall – Room 27, either via email at manager@cse.unl.edu, or by phone at (402) 472-7757.
