Dr. Mohammad Hasan and professor Matt Waite will be speaking at the interdisciplinary "Technology and Democratic Engagement" lecture next Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Sheldon auditorium.
This lecture is part of the Broader Considerations of Technology series hosted by the CSE Ambassadors, and sponsored by the Huskers Vote Coalition and University Ethics Center.
Mohammad Hasan is an assistant professor of practice in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering who specializes in machine learning and data science. Matt Waite is a professor of practice at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications who teaches reporting, web development, and digital product development.
Topics discussed will be:
· How is technology influencing our democratic process?
· How do social media algorithms influence the information we receive?
· Can social media increase voter turnout?
· What are the societal implications and how can we address these concerns moving forward?
This event is free and open to all university students, faculty, and staff, as well as the general public.
