The Partners in Pollution Prevention (P3) Internship program trains and works with junior and senior engineering/science students to provide technical assistance related to pollution prevention and sustainable operations to Nebraska businesses.
For 2019, the primary projects will relate to sustainable manufacturing processes, water and energy conservation in food processing, and energy efficiency related to wastewater treatment. Projects will focus on issues ranging from solid waste reduction, water and wastewater reduction, energy efficiency (e.g., lighting, motors, HVAC), and process modification (e.g., heat recovery, tooling redesign).
This assistance helps businesses minimize their wastes and their costs, improves worker safety and environmental compliance, and protects the environment. Student interns are provided with an intensive training course before they spend eleven weeks working with one or more assigned businesses on energy efficiency, pollution prevention and sustainability projects. The students are supported in their technical assistance efforts by University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) faculty and staff. This program is funded in part by the US Department of Energy, US Environmental Protection Agency, and Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality.
Benefits for interns:
· Formal technical and sustainability training
· Hands-on-work experience
· Professional contacts
· Summer pay of approximately $7,600 (amount varies depending on the student’s technical assistance location, with higher pay for those outside of Lincoln and Omaha)
· Meals and lodging during training at UNL
· Work-related travel & expense reimbursement in specific cases
· 3 credit hour course (senior elective class)
Approximately twelve internship positions are available:
