Remote cohort of Math in the Middle now accepting applications

With the flexibility of remote learning and the current savings in tuition and fees, now is the time to begin a master’s degree program in mathematics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Since 2004, 240 teachers have completed the Math in the Middle program, participating in a 36-hour graduate program leading to a Master of Arts for Teachers (MAT) degree from UNL’s Department of Mathematics.

We are now accepting applications to Math in the Middle from teachers who want to be part of this community of highly qualified teachers of mathematics in grades 4-8. Acceptance will be done on a rolling basis.

For those starting the Math in the Middle program in 2021, you will begin with Math 804T: Experimentation, Conjecture and Reasoning and Math 802T: Functions, Algebra & Geometry. Below are the course details; note that there are two sections of 802T from which to choose:

• Math 804T, Sec. 596: To build a sense of community, this course will be offered synchronously June 7-11 and June 14-18, with live whole-group Zoom meetings in the afternoons.
• Math 802T, Sec. 596: To follow-up and continue with this format of learning, this course will be offered synchronously June 21-25 and June 28-July 2, with live whole-group Zoom meetings in the mornings.
• Math 802T, Sec. 800: This section will be offered July 12-August 12, asynchronously. Participants will form small study groups and work at their own pace.

If you are interested in other course options or want to take more than two courses, please see the course catalog at https://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi/2021/course-catalog/. We recommend TEAC 848G June 7-18 (mornings; can be paired with Math 804T), Math 805T (June 21-July 2, afternoons; can be paired with Math 802T), and TEAC 807A July 5-16 (mornings).

Applications for the Master of Arts for Teachers degree program are due May 18, 2021, with Graduate Studies. Separate from the Graduate Studies application, you need to let us know you are interested in being part of the 2021 Math in the Middle cohort. You will have an opportunity to do this as part of an application for fellowship support. For application information and fellowship funding, please see our website: https://scimath.unl.edu/math-in-the-middle.

Please note that Math in the Middle is designed with flexibility in mind. Teachers with prior graduate credit will work with an advisor to determine which courses can count toward their master’s degree, thus shortening the time to degree, and applicants can choose up to four courses to take this summer.
