Nearly 2 out of 3 Americans unaware of common core

The majority of Americans - 62 percent - have never heard of the Common Core State Standards that have been adopted by all but four states, according to results of a new poll by Phi Delta Kappa and Gallup. The results also revealed that 55 percent of public-school parents are unaware of the standards, even as they are being implemented.

"What's most important for states and local districts to communicate is that the expectations for students have been raised and to explain to parents what that will mean in terms of putting their child on a trajectory to make sure they are ready for college and career," said Sandra Boyd of the Washington nonprofit group Achieve, which coordinated the state-led effort to write the standards.
