AMTE: Beware EdReports' curriculum analyses

Beware EdReports Curriculum Analyses
by Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

In recent months, a new organization, EdReports, has conducted a review of instructional materials for the K-12 mathematics classroom. They recently publicized their results of mostly K-8 classroom materials and textbook series. (Organizations such as the AMTE and NCTM have raised concerns about these reviews.)

We all know that finding high quality instructional resources that are aligned with current curriculum standards (CCSSM or other high-quality standards) is an important concern for school districts nationwide.

NCTM and NCSM have responded to the EdReports Reviews with an Open Letter, raising significant concerns about the methodology and content of those reviews. Several partner organizations—AMTE, TODOS, and Benjamin Banneker Association—have indicated their support of the open letter and analysis from NCTM and NCSM.

AMTE's president, Christine Thomas, and the Board of Directors became aware of these reports and of the analysis by NCTM and NCSM. The Emerging Issues Committee (EIC) explored the issue and recommended that AMTE help our membership become more aware of this issue. Recognizing the importance of information about classroom instructional resources in the work of MTE's, the Board voted to join support in this open letter.

On the AMTE website, you can find more information, including a copy of the open letter. You can also read directly about the EdReports at: http://www.edreports.org. We hope that you will find the information helpful in your work with both pre-service and in-service teachers.
