NMSSI 2017 - Math 807T Hastings

Take a look online at our newly released 2018 schedule for the Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institutes (NMSSI). Summer 2018 tuition has been updated on the costs webpage, but some of the fees have not been announced yet. A few class times may still be adjusted, so continue to check the course catalog for updates.

Due to budget cuts at the university, we can no longer pay for lunches at any of the NMSSI sites. We are disappointed that we cannot provide this benefit to you, but we hope that this change gives you more flexibility with lunch options. With this new policy in mind, we planned only one set of “paired” courses this summer to cut down on the number of lunches for which you would be responsible.

The good news is that we are still able to offer and promote 25 courses designed with K-12 math and science teachers in mind. See our catalog here: http://scimath.unl.edu/nmssi/2018/course-catalog/. Some course starting and ending times may be adjusted in the Omaha area.

Official UNL registration in MyRED begins March 5 (note that these courses in our NMSSI catalog may not appear in MyRED until after Feb. 26). For all in-person NMSSI courses, current Nebraska teachers automatically qualify for a tuition fellowship from UNL equal to 20 percent of in-state, graduate tuition. Additionally, Nebraska K-12 teachers can apply for supplemental NMSSI Fellowships to further defray tuition costs for NMSSI courses (funds are limited). See our NMSSI website for details. We expect the application to open during the week of March 5.

In addition to many courses offered in Lincoln, this summer we are partnering with Educational Service Units and local school districts to offer courses for teachers in Gretna, Hastings, Holdrege, La Vista, North Platte, and Omaha. Faculty from UNL, UNO, and Wesleyan join our pool of instructors, as will many master teachers drawn from the K-12 teacher ranks. New cohorts of Primarily Math will be starting in North Platte (for ESU 16 teachers) and La Vista (for ESU 3 and Omaha Public Schools teachers), as well as a cohort of ITEAM for ESU 3 and OPS teachers in grades 4-6. Please contact your district administrators for more information.

To broaden our ability to serve teachers from across the state, we will also offer two classes online in Summer 2018: one in mathematics (Math 807T), and one in mathematics pedagogy (TEAC 880E, Teaching with Technology in Mathematics). Unfortunately, the 20 percent tuition reduction does not apply to online courses. However, K-12 Nebraska teachers who take one of these online courses may apply for a supplemental fellowship to help defray tuition costs for these online courses.

Check out the NMSSI website at http://go.unl.edu/nmssi for updates on course offerings, information about registration, tuition and fees, and the availability of fellowships.
