This afternoon Heidi Diefes-Dux, Professor of Engineering Education at UNL, will present results from her research on the use of reflection to improve student engagement.

Abstract:
Feedback should fuel reflection, and reflection should entail critical thinking on an experience and lead to insight and action. In a multi-section first-year engineering course, standards based grading (SBG) provided clear and ongoing feedback on students’ attainment of learning objectives. Reflection on ones learning was seen as being a means to encourage timely access and sense-making of that feedback. This presentation will consider results of two research avenues: (1) a quantitative investigation into students’ access to their feedback when weekly reflection was and was not implemented across the semester, and (2) a qualitative exploration of select students’ written reflections – their actions and plans in relation to their perceived and actual performance on learning objectives.
